Clerkenwell is a neighbourhood steeped in heritage and layered with stories. Once a centre of monastic life, the area will satisfy any history buff. By the 18th century, being just outside the jurisdiction of the city, our setting was a notorious haunt of mountebanks, tricksters and thieves, some of whom have rooms named in their ‘honour’ at The Rookery. Today, Clerkenwell is home to a myriad of creative industries as well as being a destination for discerning diners. Discover a wealth of restaurants, from charming independent kitchens to Michelin-starred icons.

Barbican

An icon of Brutalist architecture, the Barbican has always been controversial. Voted ‘London’s ugliest building’ in 2003, it’s considered one of the UK’s architectural treasures by design aficionados.

In 2001, the entire complex received Grade II-listed status. Today, you can explore the site freely, from the Centre’s many public spaces, cafés and restaurants to the high walks and estate gardens.

The Barbican has an ever-changing, innovative international programme that crosses art forms, collaborating with organisations from around the globe.

The Charterhouse

This ancient monastery – converted into a Tudor mansion, and now home to a group of elderly ‘Brothers’ who live as a secular community – is just a few minutes’ walk from The Rookery.

Tucked away behind a high perimeter wall, the Charterhouse (founded in 1371 and enlarged steadily throughout the centuries), had always been intensely private – impossible to enter, in fact. But you can now discover the secrets of London’s oldest and most picturesque ‘living’ heritage site by joining a guided tour, led by one of the Brothers.
